24th British-Irish Council Summit held in Dublin

19 June 2015

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny hosted the twenty-fourth Summit meeting  of the British-Irish Council in Dublin Castle today. The meeting was attended by Leaders and Ministers from the eight BIC Member Administrations: the UK Government; the devolved administrations of the Scottish and Welsh Governments and Northern Ireland Executive; the Governments of the Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey and the host, the Irish Government.

The Council discussed the continuing improving economic situation in Member Administrations, recognising the interdependence and links between their economies.

The Council had a detailed discussion on the significant harm being caused by alcohol to individuals, families and society and was presented with a collaborative paper by the Misuse of Substances work sector.   It was agreed that continuing action is required across Member Administrations to protect the health and well-being of the wider public, and especially children, from alcohol misuse.

The Council received an update of the work ongoing in all twelve BIC work sectors and also reviewed the latest youth employment statistics.  The Council also asked officials to review its activities and working arrangements and to furnish an initial report to the next Summit in November.
