The British-Irish Council (BIC) held its 32nd Summit meeting today hosted by the UK Government. The heads of delegation were welcomed to Manchester by Rt Hon David Lidington MP, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and Minister for the Cabinet Office, on behalf of the UK Government. Ministers with particular responsibility for energy met in advance of the Summit meeting. Ministers discussed and reviewed a paper prepared by the BIC Energy work sector: ‘Making the Transition to a Smarter Energy System’. Ministers discussed the approaches which were most effective in realising the transition to smart energy systems; the barriers needed to be overcome, and also priorities for research and innovation funding. Ministers considered how smart energy systems could be promoted at a local and community level.
