The British-Irish Council (BIC) held its 45th Summit meeting last Friday on 10th July 2026, hosted by the Government of Guernsey in St Peter Port.

At the Summit, leaders welcomed progress by officials to mark the breadth and depth of the Council’s work through a cross-cutting symposium to be held on Tuesday 29th September 2026 in Edinburgh.

The occasion will bring together policymakers, academics, and practitioners from across the Council’s eight Member Administrations. The title of the symposium is ‘These Islands: Cultivating Communities and Tackling Inequalities’.

The BIC has ten active work sectors reflecting the priorities of its Member Administrations. Through a series of panel discussions, keynote addresses and workshops, the gathering will consider the shared ties across the BIC’s areas of work and the importance of holistic policymaking.

The programme will feature four sessions covering:

  • Built Environment
  • Circularity and Sustainability
  • Supporting a Healthy Society
  • Culture and Heritage

The occasion represents a significant milestone in the BIC’s calendar for 2026, and in line with the Council’s mission will provide an open forum to share innovative solutions to common challenges and a platform to further enhance relationships across these islands.
