The UK Government hosted a British-Irish Council Energy Work Sector Ministerial meeting in London today, Thursday 12 February 2026. The meeting was jointly chaired by the UK Government Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero, The Lord Whitehead CBE, and the Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Climate Action and Energy, Gillian Martin MSP.

Ministers reviewed the activities of the Energy Work Sector between 2022-2025 and commended the variety of work undertaken during this period. The report is attached below.

Ministers also agreed a new Work Plan for the Energy Work Sector, with a focus on the following priority areas:

  • Public Acceptance
  • Just Transition
  • Supply Chains and Skills
  • Peer Reviews

The day prior, ministers and officials were hosted by British Embassy Dublin and the UK Government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero for a networking event in London.

As part of the event, Chris Stark, Head of the UK’s Clean Power Mission, gave a presentation about the UK’s pathway to Net Zero as well as the challenges and opportunities posed by a rapidly evolving global environment.

Last week, the Scottish Government hosted the BIC’s Energy Work Sector in Grangemouth, Falkirk and Edinburgh.

The visit commenced with a Scottish Enterprise tour of Grangemouth’s industrial cluster. The tour showcased the work taking place to deliver the Grangemouth Just Transition Plan and secure the site’s net zero future.

The group then toured Forth Valley College’s Skills Transition Centre, where staff upskill the local workforce to support their employment in a range of areas including low carbon industries.

The following day, the Energy Work Sector held a productive meeting at St Andrew’s House in Edinburgh to discuss ongoing decarbonisation efforts by Member Administrations, as well as future priorities for the Work Sector in 2026 and beyond.
