Government : The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy. It
does not have a ‘written constitution’ set out in any one document. Instead,
the relationship between the State and the people relies on statute law,
common law and conventions.
The Head of State is Her Majesty the Queen, Elizabeth II. The UK Parliament
is at Westminster and consists of the House of Commons and House of Lords.
The Government headed by the Prime Minister is accountable to Parliament.
Following devolution, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are now responsible
for much of their own domestic affairs. The Government remains responsible
for a number of UK wide powers including defence, foreign affairs and monetary
policy as well as domestic matters in England.
